Should Caste Discrimination be included in the agenda of the WCAR?

The following are articles submitted to the Times of India and The Hindu newspapers in India during March and April 2001. They cover many of the arguments for and against the inclusion of caste discrimination in the WCAR. At present the Indian government has managed to keep caste discrimination out of the preparatory documents. However, Dalit organisations in India and Nepal, Buraku Liberation League in Japan and a growing number of regional and international organisations are forming an enormous movement to push for this issue – affecting 240 million persons - to be addressed at the international level. The articles are published in an on-line forum on Asian Human Rights Commission’s website: www.ahrchk.net
